RÍO DE JANEIRO, 9 abr (Tierramérica).- Una investigación de la Escola Superior de Agricultura Luiz de Queiroz, de la Universidad de São Paulo, comprobó que las abejas pueden actuar como bioindicadoras de la contaminación y calidad del aire.
Las abejas obreras hacen vuelos exploratorios alrededor de sus colmenas para recoger agua, néctar y polen de las flores, con los que producen miel, jalea real, cera y propóleos.
Con el análisis de la recolección hecha en esas expediciones, el estudio constató que, en un ambiente contaminado, los microorganismos y las sustancias químicas presentes impregnan el polen.
“Los resultados pueden servir para alertar a los apicultores sobre el área de instalación de un apiario. Además del polen, los productos apícolas también pueden ser utilizados para monitorear la contaminación y prevenirla, ya que las partículas contaminantes se transmiten a esos productos”, dijo a Tierramérica la bióloga Talita Antonia da Silveira, responsable de la investigación.
